CommUnity

commUnity, the subject society of the Department of Commerce, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, University of Delhi, is founded on the belief in conscientious commerce—commerce guided by conscience, integrity and responsibility rather than driven by greed. The society seeks to nurture socially responsible and ethically conscious individuals who understand that sustainable success and meaningful economic progress must be rooted in honesty, accountability and concern for society. Through its academic, co-curricular and outreach initiatives, commUnity encourages students to look beyond conventional notions of success and embrace values that promote both individual growth and collective well-being. The Department fosters a distinctive set of values among its students: Being a giver rather than merely a getter; A good follower before aspiring to be a leader; Serving to deserve before desiring; Accepting defeat with sporting spirit rather than pursuing victory at any cost; Choosing goodness over greatness; and Practising mindful, “honeybee-like” consumption. As an expression of this vision, commUnity organizes its annual inter-college festival, Zucitva—derived from the Sanskrit word Shuchita, meaning purity. The festival provides a platform for students to engage, compete and learn while promoting the principles of purity, integrity and honesty, reinforcing its commitment to the ideal of conscientious commerce. The ethos of commUnity is further strengthened by three specialized verticals: the Finance and Investment Cell, which develops financial awareness and informed investment perspectives; Merkat, the marketing society, which nurtures creativity, strategic thinking and contemporary marketing skills; and Joy of Giving, the social responsibility cell, which encourages empathy, service and meaningful community engagement. Through commUnity, the Department of Commerce strives to develop not merely competent commerce professionals, but responsible citizens and ethical leaders committed to building a fairer and more conscientious society.
